A proposed graphite drilling project in South Dakota’s Black Hills has officially been canceled after strong opposition from Native American tribes and advocacy groups. The project, led by Rapid City-based Pete Lien & Sons, faced backlash because of its location near Pe’ Sla, a sacred site where Sioux tribes pray, hold ceremonies and gather throughout the year. The area is also used for buffalo grazing and holds deep cultural and spiritual importance. After lawsuits were filed and a temporary restraining order stopped drilling activities, the company decided to withdraw the project entirely.
