Bank of America said Nielsen scanner data for the week ended July 25 showed aluminum cans continued gaining market share in the beverage packaging industry. Non-alcoholic beverage volumes rose 0.7% over the latest four weeks, with aluminum cans growing 2.6% year over year, outperforming plastic containers, which increased just 0.2%, while glass packaging declined 4.5%.
Demand remained strongest in canned soft drinks and energy drinks. Canned carbonated soft drinks rose 3.6% over the four-week period, while canned energy drinks gained 4.4%. In contrast, plastic-packaged soft drinks fell 4.1%, although bottled water in plastic containers increased 1.5%.
Alcoholic beverage volumes remained weak, declining by the mid-single digits across the four-, 13-, and 52-week periods. Canned alcoholic beverages fell 1.6% year over year in the latest four weeks, while glass-packaged alcoholic drinks dropped 6.2%.
